Vintage Birger Haglund South African Sterling Silver Brooch

ayquebella.com
Beautiful, heavy-gauge, Sterling Silver brooch by Birger Haglund. Artistically designed, rectangular brooch adorned with a depiction of “Mother Africa” – a raised, etched design of the continent of Africa with an African woman surveying her land. This rare and gorgeous brooch has African pyramids to the north, a ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and an elephant almost camouflaged by foliage in the west. Surrounding each edge of the rectangular form is a beveled carved, tribal design. Swedish silversmith and artist, Birger Haglund lived in South Africa from 1948 to 1952 and one can tell from his loving design that this piece is a representation of how much he was enamored by the continent. The brooch is coated with a very rich, undisturbed, velvety, natural patina and is hallmarked.
