Such beautifully rich and iridescent colors on this whimsical brooch from New Zealand! This very pretty brooch is of the Kiwi, an adorable, endangered little bird that is the unofficial, national icon and the most well-known symbol of New Zealand. Aside from being so cute, Kiwis have some very unique characteristics which make them exceptionally awesome.

This very terrific brooch is made of fine silver and Päua, New Zealand’s natural jewel from the sea. Päua is a species of abalone with a very special, multi-colored shell that is found exclusively off the coasts of New Zealand. Due to their incredible beauty, Päua shells (pronounced "pah-wah") have been valued by the Māori for centuries as taonga (treasure).

In Australia and the United States, Päua are known as abalone, but there are differences in the New Zealand gems of the sea to the others. Päua is regarded for being the most colorful of the abalone species and displays intense colors of green, pink, purple, blue, gold or even crimson red. Its iridescence is similar to Mother of Pearl but is far more brilliant and the colors change when viewed at different angles as light refracts within the crystal layers. Its luster is truly a marvel of nature.

The silver on this gorgeous brooch has an undisturbed, natural patina that enhances it tremendously. This little Kiwi is so adorable and will look great on every outfit!
