Such a pretty, sterling silver pendant! This lovely pendant represents the refreshing and stimulating South American organic and caffeinated energy drink, Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate was believed to be the herb “from the gods” to sustain life, increase vitality and heal the sick. Today, it is consumed like most beverages such as coffee, tea or cola. Traditionally it was prepared in a hollowed-out gourd (“mate”) but today it is consumed from cups or small bowls. Hot water is added to the herb (“yerba”) to infuse, but unlike tea leaves, the herb is not strained out. Instead the beverage is sipped through a bombilla, a metal or bamboo straw with small holes at the bottom that act as a sieve.
